  1. How did you come up with the idea for Biner Cards?

My husband and I live in Alberta and spend a lot of time hiking, backpacking, cycling, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing in the wonderous Canadian Rockies. We also travel some, and I have been very frustrated by the lack of straight-forward information for the do-it-yourself outdoor enthusiast to find and do our favorite activities. Often the only information I can find is online, and it can be disjointed, hard-to-follow, and focuses more on the person's opinions and experiences than on the information I need to decide if I can (and want to) go do the thing myself (where to find it, how to get there, distance, elevation gain, and so on).

The idea for Biner Cards came to me on our last trip to Mexico. I found some information online about some hike and cycle activities in the area, but when we got there, we couldn't easily find the places and I was loathe to spend $100/ea for a guide to take us out to do a simple hike or bike trip (my apologies to the guides who make their living this way). I started thinking about what that area (Puerto Vallarta) could do to cater to the do-it-yourself crowd to make it easier for us to come in and do our stuff, and I was also thinking about the hawkers who walk up and down the beaches selling their small items, and I started thinking about something that would be small, light-weight and cheap, so the beach hawkers could sell them. The idea grew from there.

  2. Who are you?

At this time, "we" are a one-person operation. My name is Rhonda Scheurer, and if you Google me, you'll find lots of information about me in relation to the Calgary Outdoor Club and the Edmonton Outdoor Club. I have some support from my partner, Brent Stephens, and I have a friend, Lalia Gonzalez, in Puerto Vallarta who I'm hoping to get involved soon to start developing the products for that area.

  3. When did Biner Cards start?

The trip to Puerto Vallarta, where the idea was born, happened in February of 2013, but we didn't start working on our products and web site until July 2013. We officially started rolling Biner Cards off the line (or laminator, as the case may be) in mid-July 2013.

  4. Why Don't You Have a Card for Knots?

We agree that knots are awesome, but someone is already making great cards for knots. See NetKnots.com for your knot card needs.

  5. What are StabilIcers and Microspikes?

A lot of our winter cards recommend StabilIcers and Microspikes. After completing hundreds of winter trails with friends, we have all agreed that these two products offer the best traction on icy mountain trails. Some other products don't fare well in mountain conditions, and actual mountaineering crampons are overkill. For icy mountain trails, our tried-and-true foot gear are:
    - StabilIcers
    - Microspikes

  6. Can You Make a Card For ______?

We are able to make cards for any place that:
    - We have personally gone
    - We have someone to contribute content
If you want a card for a specific trip, we would love to work with you to make that happen, but we may need your help. See our Contribute page for full details about how you can contribute photos (and even the complete content for) Biner Cards.

  7. How Can I Get my Photos on Biner Cards?

See our Contribute page for full details about how you can contribute photos (and even the complete content for) Biner Cards.
